THULA was launched 1985. She had been built at Royal Huisman Shipyard as HETAIROS for an extremely experienced owner who assigned the exterior designs to Henry Scheel (1911-1993) and the interior to Pieter Beeldsnijder (1938- 2016), both prominent architects of the yachting industry.
Today, more than 30 years on, THULA, has matured into one of the world’s great classic sailing yachts. In her swirling wake, she might have left many tens of thousands miles behind her, but every mile added to her reliability.
Her current owner seeks a caring successor for this superb yacht, which is one of the sailing world’s great masterpieces. THULA is in an excellent condition and ready-to-go.
THULA, once SASSAFRAS and originally HETAIROS, has given its three owners, their families and friends wonderful experiences with oceans of joy and pleasure.
Her first owner cruised her in North Europe, the Med, the Caribbean (1985-1993) and down the eastern South American Coast, into the River Amazon, as far as navigational.
Her second owners, residents of New Zealand, sailed her as SASSAFRAS in Australian waters, and through the islands of the Pacific Ocean (1994-2005).
Her third and current owner brought the yacht back to Europe to cruise in the Baltic, North Sea, Med, Caribbean and as well in the eastern part of USA.
TWO OF THE WORLD’S MOST GIFTED NAVAL ARCHITECTS COLLABORATED IN THE CREATION OF THULA.
HENRY SCHEEL gave this yacht its timeless lines with a wonderful sheer.
In the late 1960s he turned his inspirational talents to yachts, designed water-craft for Disney World, and in 1971 set up his own design office, Scheel Yachts Inc. In this period he patented a keel featuring a shallow draft without a centreboard. It had the lowest possible ballast positioning providing maximum stability under large sail areas, which result in high boat speeds. Over 2,500 boats, including THULA / HETAIROS have been fitted with this innovative, draft and drag reducing keel. Furthermore, Henry Scheel has another 250 boat designs to his credit.
PIETER BEELDSNIJDER was the perfectionist interior designer operating out of Edam, a picturesque village in The Netherlands. He is known in the superyacht world primarily for his breathtaking, wood-lavished interiors. He eschewed clutter and strove to create “unfussy” interiors. Whether a sailing or motor yacht, all his interiors had a common denominator: classic, simple elegance.
Pieter Beeldsnijder gladly cooperated with prominent Dutch yacht builders, and created more than 20 designs for Royal Huisman Shipyard. THULA’s interior pedigree fits well with those of JULIET, HANUMAN, ETHEREAL, ATHENA, HYPERION, GLISS etc., many of which are International Superyacht Society design awardees. In the course of his 55-year career, Pieter Beeldsnijder worked on more than 2,500 vessels.
THE ROYAL HUISMAN SHIPYARD is a fifth generation company founded in 1884. In the mid-60s, as the fiberglass boat industry took off with mass production, Wolter Huisman, the fourth heir, decided to build bespoke yachts in aluminium, in Vollenhove in the heart of Holland.
Since then, a Huisman yacht has become the synonym for finest custom engineering and craftsmanship. The line of exceptional names is long and includes the Whitbread Round the World Race record breakers FLYER I and II, JULIET, a 143 foot benchmark setting yacht, ENDEAVOUR, a stunning J-Class yacht – and the first “new build” of this type. The mid-eighties saw the launchings of Henry Scheel’s HETAIROS and FOFTEIN, and the in the early nineties ATHENA and BORKUM RIFF, schooners of 90 and 50 meters, set their sails.
In 1975 Rondal was founded as a separate company inventing and manufacturing the special deck hardware, masts and spars needed on super-sized sailing yachts, as for example on HETAIROS / THULA. On the yard’s centenary anniversary in 1984, the yard was bestowed the prefix “Royal”, in recognition of 100 years of quality and excellence. A culture of perfectionism applies to the yard’s leading-edge technologies
as it does to traditional craft skills. And THULA is a prime example of this unswerving philosophy.
